Common Questions About Sedation Dentistry

Common Questions About Sedation DentistrySunrise Family Dentistry provides dental services for the entire family. It is located in Roseville, California. Our goal is to provide you affordable, pain free and quality dental care, whether you are visiting us for a twice-yearly checkup, have a toothache, need your teeth whitened or are experiencing a problem of a more serious nature.

Many people avoid getting regular dental checkups because they believe the treatment is unpleasant and painful. In reality, if you visit a dentist regularly for examinations, many serious and costly problems are avoided. We utilize different methods to sedate the patient. This ensures that your visit is comfortable instead of being anxiety provoking.

It is our desire to administer virtually pain-free services to you and your family members. This is why we use various forms of sedation in our practice. Here are some questions that may concern you.

  • 1. Will I sleep through the procedure? Some people have moderate to severe phobias about dental pain. If this describes you, we will discuss your various options prior to your first procedure. Patients with mild anxiety may only require an oral sedation that simply relaxes them during the procedure. If you choose to be sedated intravenously, it does not put you to sleep. You will simply be quite relaxed, yet can still follow verbal commands from the dentist and his staff. If the dentist uses general anesthesia, you will sleep throughout the entire procedure.

  • 2. Why do you give local anesthetic with sedation? The use of sedation dentistry allows the patient to relax or sleep during the procedure. It does not prevent pain; therefore, it is necessary to administer a local anesthetic to numb the area. The discomfort our patients feel from the local anesthetic is similar to a mosquito bite and only lasts a second or two. After the treatment is complete, you may experience numbness in your lip or gum for a while, but most people believe the temporary feeling is well worth the benefits.

  • 3. Is sedation acceptable during cleanings or other routine procedures? If your anxiety level is so high that you desire sedating during a checkup or other simple procedure, we will be glad to provide you with it. Our goal is for our patients to have healthy teeth, gums and mouths; therefore, we do everything possible to make the visit a pleasant experience.

  • 4. Who should try sedation dentistry? Anyone who experiences stress prior to and during a dental visit can try sedation dentistry. We know that a patient who leaves our office knowing that his or her comfort is our first priority will return for follow-up exams and further treatment, if necessary. Your oral health doesn’t affect only your mouth, it can affect your whole body. This is why we strive to provide you with a soothing and pain free experience while in our office. People with movement disorders or limited mobility are excellent candidates for sedation dentistry as well. If you have difficulty controlling your gag reflex, sedation dentistry helps with that as well.
